 Congressional Aptitude Studies

Okay. All of you want to get elected and some of you are graduates who are already
members of Congress and  are here for a refresher course.

Let's get to it.

You are walking down an alley late at night, when you hear the cry of, "Help!
Help!" coming from behind a dumpster. Two thugs are trying to steal an
old lady's handbag, but she is  putting up a Hell of a fight and won't let go.
What should you do?

(a) Spend the next hour debating whether you should get involved?
(b) Keep walking and pretend you don't see a thing?
(c) Help? If you answer "c" elaborate.

Answer!
If you answered "a", step back. A member of Congress needs to be able to
think on his or her feet. It shouldn't take a hour to decide anything. Remember
the camera is always rolling. You must think and act, as well as speak  in thirty
second 'bites".

If you answered "b", you showed "Congressional member aptitude". You took the
superior stance of not being bothered by small things. A member keeps his eye
on the big picture, the big contributor, the big, big. An old woman in an alley late
at night, how big can she be?

If you answered "c", you should be congratulated. It shouldn't take the three of you
very long to get her handbag!

A senior Congressman is on his death bed. He has done a few things that the
prophets of the Good Book wouldn't  endorse. A priest has been summoned
to his bed to hear his confession. This priest does the usual priest thing and
concludes by telling him, "Denounce Satan! Let him know how little you think
of his evil!" What should the dying Congressman do?

(a) Denounce the devil loudly, (as loud as his body is capable),  confess
his sins and join the priest in prayer?

(b) Denounce the devil, and help his party  and cause by issuing a press statement,
and by calling for contributions to a memorial fund to further the cause of
"devil and evil denouncing", so that the Congressman memory and work may
    continue after he has passed?

(c) Keep quiet.

Answers:

If chose "a" --what can I say? You have flunked! This is the wrong answer!

If you chose "b", you are allowing sentiment to influence your judgment. Your party
and cause may need the money that  your memorial fund  might be able to raise, but
you are missing the bigger picture.

If you answered "c", this is the correct answer. Remember the first rule of Congressional
survival: "Protect your own behind!" The Congressman is dying. Until he knows for sure
where he is going, he should not antagonize the devil.
